What is SEO?

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. It describes a series of techniques which improve the visibility of a website in search engine result pages. The goal of such optimization is to rank as highly as possible for a certain search query. Naturally, this is easier said than done…
Optimization techniques can be divided into two categories:
Techniques that search engines recommend as part of good design are called white-hat SEO. They are considered safe and produce long term results.
Black-hat SEO on the other hand, uses techniques that are disapproved of by the search engines. Websites that employ these techniques can suffer a ranking penalty; worst case scenario being complete removal from the index. For some examples of black-hat SEO, take a look at DesignHammer’s 17 Black Hat SEO Techniques to Avoid.
When we talk about SEO we usually refer to Google as a search engine. After all, Google has a market share of 91%, making it the most important search engine. But the techniques we’ll be discussing are just applicable for Bing and Yahoo as well.

SEO Glossary

In the following articles we’ll be using certain SEO-related keywords. Knowing the meaning behind these terms can be useful for newcomers. Below you’ll find an alphabetical list of terms we’ll be frequently using.
  • CMS: Content management system, for example WordPress or Drupal.
  • CTR: Click-through rate, the percentage of users that click on a link.
  • GYM: Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, owners of the biggest three search engines.
  • Link juice: Link quality that is transferred between sites/pages.
  • Long tail: More specific keywords, e.g. “navigation bar photoshop tutorial”
  • META tags: Code in the head-section of a website that is used on search engine result pages.
  • Organic traffic: Traffic that comes from search engines.
  • PR: PageRank, a measure for the link popularity of a website.
  • SEO: Search engine optimization. Techniques that are used to make your website rank more highly.
  • SERP: Search engine results page. The page with the most relevant web pages for your query.
  • Spider: A bot that is used by search engines to crawl and index websites.
  • Stuffing: Using the same keyword too often on the same page.
  • UGC: User generated content, a great way to add unique content to a page.

Why is SEO Important?

SEO is all about ranking. But why is this position so important for websites?
In late spring of 2011 Slingshot SEO conducted a study about the CTR of search results. They compared the position of a website in the SERP to the respective click-through rate. This is the outcome of their research:
arif anjum
The result is clear: higher ranking = higher CTR. For companies who make most of their money online, such as web shops, this can be a matter of life and death. Thanks to SEO these companies can improve their organic traffic (and income) significantly.
Good SEO is not something you do without a game plan. A good place to start our SEO efforts is learning how search engines work. This information can give us some ideas on which tactics work and which are useless.

How Search Engines Work

The internet is incredibly large; there are (currently) approximately 50 billion indexed web pages and without search engines it would be impossible to find useful information in this clutter. It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
arif anjum
Search engines bring order to this chaos. By building an index they can show you the most relevant web pages for your search query. But this index changes frequently. New websites are added daily, web pages are redesigned, new files are uploaded, etc. Because the internet is a dynamic entity, search engines need a tool to help the index stay up to date.
That’s where crawlers come into play. These automated robots scrape web pages for information; they index links, images, videos and other files.
Here’s how a search engine uses crawlers to create search engine result pages:
  1. Discovery: The crawler finds your website, either via a link from another website or via the Add URL page. Currently, Google only follows href and src links.
  2. Indexing: The web pages are processed and indexed. Note that not all content types can be indexed (e.g. some rich media types or dynamic pages).
  3. Results: When you enter a query, search engines analyze their index and show you the most relevant web pages.
In order to show you the most relevant results from their index, search engines need to use a ranking system. There are several factors that are taken into consideration and understanding these factors is essential for your SEO success.

Search Engine Ranking Factors

Relevancy is determined by over 200 factors. It’s impossible to discuss them all, partially because it would take too much time, but mostly because we don’t know all of them. However, research has identified several elements that are important:

Links

When we talk about links, we talk about PageRank; the link analysis algorithm used by Google. It was made by Larry Page (hence the name PageRank) and Sergei Brin, the company’s founders.
This algorithm takes quantities of links into account – every link to a website is seen as a vote for that website. The more links you get, the higher you will rank.
One thing you should keep in mind is that this is not a democratic system. Not every link has the same weight. Links from authoritative websites have more influence than links from less popular websites.

Keywords

The keyword distribution on your page is also important. Google checks how often the search query can be found on your page. If it appears in your domain, url, title, header tags, content… the page will be considered more relevant.

Site Age

Old is gold. Google considers older websites to be more authoritative than new websites.

Freshness

Frequently updating your website is a good idea. Add new pages or update old ones. Fresh pages are a sign that the website is not dead.

Other Factors

As I’ve said before: it’s impossible to discuss all the ranking factors. There are others, such as site speed,AuthorRank, site structure… but these are some of the most important.
If you want to know more about search engine ranking factors, I suggest you read Search Engine Rankingon SEOmoz.

Algorithm Updates

Do the words Google Panda and Google Penguin mean anything to you? No…?
Over the years there have been several algorithm updates. These updates are meant to increase the quality of search results. Two recent updates with a big impact were the Panda and Penguin update. The Panda update went into effect in February 2011. It affected almost 12 percent of all search results. The Penguin update was announced in April 2012 and affected approximately 3.1% of search queries.
This means that a sudden drop in traffic (an unusual, long-term drop that doesn’t correct itself), might be caused by a change in the ranking algorithm. Check the date in your analytics program and cross reference it with this overview of algorithm updates. Find out what might have caused the problem and adjust your web pages accordingly.
With these updates negative SEO saw the light of day. Negative SEO occurs when a competitor’s site is targeted by a huge amount of low quality links. If the amount of these low-quality links is high enough, Google might penalize the website. For more information about negative SEO, check out this infographic on TastyPlacement (Google recently released a tool to counter these practices, but more on that later).

What About Mobile SEO?

Mobile SEO is logically becoming increasingly important as the market of smartphones and tablets continues along its upward trajectory. Did you know that in 2011 more smartphones were sold than PCs (488 million vs 415 million respectively)? Optimizing your website for mobile devices has become a must.
Up until a year or two, we saw a lot of mobile subdomains, for example m.company.com. These subdomains hosted a website that was specifically designed for mobile devices. As a result, it was completely detached from the original site (often with less content).
Thankfully there’s a more labor-efficient way to show your content to mobile users: responsive design. A responsive design adapts itself to the current screen size by using CSS3 media queries. This means that you only need to develop one site instead of two.
Responsive design is recommended by Google(!) because of the following benefits:
  • A single URL is easier for users to interact with.
  • A single URL helps Google’s algorithm assign the indexing properties for the content.
  • Reduced loading times because no redirection is needed.
  • Responsive pages can be crawled by any Googlebot, improving crawling efficiency.
One thing you should keep in mind is that searches on mobile devices are usually shorter than on desktops. If your content is targeting mobile users, optimize for these shorter search queries.

What’s Next?

Now that you have a little background information about search engine optimization, we can take a look at some of the things we’ll be discussing during the following weeks. The posts can be divided into 3 categories:
  • Site-wide SEO: Techniques that are used site-wide and have an effect on all pages.
  • On-page SEO: SEO tactics that can be used on an individual page.
  • Off-site SEO: Tactics that are beyond our website.
Hope to see you again soon!

Web Analytics Tools

Overview: These free and paid tools allow you to track what keywords are sending you traffic, what keywords are profitable, and what keywords lose money. As soon as you start tracking results your campaigns get more efficient because you start focusing on the results.
Tracking where you already rank does not alert you to potential areas of opportunity that you have not yet focused on, but if you track conversions you know what those keywords are worth, and it is easier to rank for keywords related to words you already rank well for than it is to rank for a whole new basket of keywords.
At the bottom of this page is a free video about using web analytics tools.

Free Analytics Tools

These tend to be limited in feature set and give themselves sitewide links on your site, or require you to trust giving a major search engine like Google virtually all your marketing data.
  • Google Analytics - powerful full featured analytics tool. Even allows you to track your ROI by keyword for each AdWords ad position. Google AdWords also has internal split testing and conversion tracking software & offers data integration with Google AdSense that you can't get with any other web analytics tool.
  • Google Website Optimizer - allows you to A/B split test landing pages and track how well Google AdWords traffic converts.
  • Piwik - realtime open source web analytics program
  • Open Web Analytics - similar to Piwik, but more lightweight. Also comes with the ability to record the browser screen on user's sessions.
  • Site Meter - starts off as free, but charges for advanced features
  • Stat Counter - starts off as free, but charges for advanced features and bandwith usage.
  • Webalizer - default log analyzer on many servers.
  • Analog - default log analyzer on many servers.
  • Awstats - another popular default log analyzer on many servers.

Cheap Paid Analytics Tools

  • Clicky - cheap web based tool similar to Google Analytics. A few less features, but you get realtime data and are not giving all your data to Google either. Also offers a cheap white label analytics package convenient for SEO firms looking to add another revenue stream to their businesses.
  • Mint - affordable downloadable analytics program that you set up on your own server. Unlike most other paid analytics programs in Mint does not track conversions.
  • WordTracker's Strategizer - helps bucket data from Google Analytics into groups to help you spot opportunities to grow your organic search footprint

Affordable Business Analytics Tools

Usability Feedback

Expensive / Enterprise Premium Tools

  • Google's Urchin
  • Adobe's Omniture
  • WebTrends
  • comScore's Digital Analytix Suite
  • IBM's Coremetrics

The Official SEO Ultimate WordPress Plugin Tutorial

It’s that time again to kick off the new year and what better way to do so than (1) a new update to - “The Real All-In-One SEO Plugin for WordPressSEO Ultimate and (2) to  introduce (our long-awaited) comprehensive video tutorial covering each SEO Module in detail for our plugin.

For the record, SEO Ultimate was NOT designed for the public; it was originally designed as an in-house SEO tool deployed specifically to provide unparalleled on page SEO setup for WordPress. By consolidating these features into modules (that we could simply toggle on or off and configure at will) allowed us to virtually dominate hundreds of markets for our clients (without having to painstakingly customize the code time and time again).

Why All the Secrecy with SEO Ultimate?

Many wondered – if SEO Ultimate is so awesome, then why not show us how to use this thing? Well, frankly,  if you weren’t a client, then we didn’t want to create unnecessary competition in our markets, especially from giving away our most cherished methods free of charge.
We hope this explains the lack of documentation over the years aside from version updates where we briefly informed users about new features, but in all honesty, we kept the real power of SEO Ultimate close to the chest – until now. The time has come to provide detailed documentation of each module, why it’s important and of course, how to use it – courtesy of our lead developer John Lamansky.
Unlike some half-baked SEO plugins, we poured over 15 years of real world advanced SEO principles into this plugin. Prior to releasing this tutorial, the argument of just how powerful SEO Ultimate vs. any other SEO plugin may have been in question. However, after watching the video, this should clear up any confusion about the depth or the real purpose behind each module and the scope of the plugin.
SEO Ultimate has amazing features such as:
  • Twitter Cards
  • Opengraph Integration
  • Rich Snippets (For Local Pages, Reviews and More)
  • Automated Internal Linking (with New Link Dampening Feature)
  • Affiliate Link Masking
  • A Mass/Bulk Editor for Complete Editing for Meta Tags, Titles, Keywords, Categories, Media Attachments, Post Format Archives and much, much more.

The WP Ultimate Framework

While the deliberate suppression of information regarding the inner workings of the SEO Ultimate features was not entirely deliberate, there was a concurrent master plan in the works. Just think of it like a 6 year chess game where each move unfolds another strategic layer of the battle plan, only to culminate in a brilliant (market-dominating) end-game and check mate. It’s like that, but in this case its all about the WP Ultimate Framework.

The WP Ultimate Framework for WordPress
The market dominating check mate in this scenario was that our proprietary SEO platform (SEO Ultimate) was absorbed and integrated into our WordPress Framework to provide unparalled SEO & Design flexibility. The beauty for end-users is, once you gain access to the framework, you also get access to the training as well.

Is WP Ultimate Ready Yet?

Thank you for your patience, as many of you know for the past two years we’ve toiled away in the labs like obsessive compulsive perfectionists testing the WPU Framework and we’re nearly finished coding and stress-testing now. When complete, we will release 1000 copies to a select group, then take that feedback and roll even more powerful features into the Framework.
Consider it a work in progress, however, recent additions to the framework include adding Twitter Bootstrap, Google Fonts, a Lightbox Feature which can be toggled via a timer or link), a more comprehensive Style Editor, a New Media Manager suite to insert ads, media, shortcodes and more and a Completely Reworked Grid System to handle responsive layouts, fluid layouts or the ability to create fixed width layouts to liberate your design impulse and display options and build websites that rank as great as they look.
Combine this with the robust SEO power of SEO Ultimate and you can see why we’re excited…
For a sneak peek, you can read a few of the WP Ultimate features, or stay tuned as we release more information on the launch details over the next few weeks.

WARNING!

I prefer transparency about everything, so, do not be surprised from the opt-in form prior to accessing the video tutorial. The video is over one hour long and jam-packed with  EVERYTHING you’ll need to get the most our of SEO Ultimate.
Also, keep in mind, we intend on putting other advanced training videos and tactics which will not be featured anywhere else in the members section. By opting-in, you’ll gain access to that material and will also be notified when we launch the WP Ultimate Framework.
We hate spam as much as you do and respect your privacy. You can opt out-at any time.  This (content-locking) method simply helps us manage our user-base more efficiently and separate the power-users from the sheep.

SEO Tips and Practices for 2012

On Page SEO Practices and Tips for 2012

On page SEO ranking depends on a number of factors that include:
  1. Title tags and meta tags
  2. Keyword density
  3. LSI keywords
Let’s have a look at them!

1. Title Tags and Meta Tags:

You no longer should put the main keyword directly into the title tag all the time. Instead you should use LSI keywords (LSI are explained bellow) or a variation of the main keyword you targeting in the title/description tags. For example your main keyword is: “How to make money online.” You can use some of the variations: “Learn how to make money online” or “Want to know how to make money online?”
This way it looks more natural to the search engines and you won’t get penalized for OVER optimization. Although there are still examples of websites that are ranking well with just the main keyword in the title/description tags but it’s safe to stay away from such tactics now.

2. Keyword Density:

There was a time when the optimum range for keyword density was 2-4%. However, it is no longer the same. Today, the range of 0.5-1% works out to be a lot more effective.

3. LSI Keywords:

One of the essential and most important factors in 2012 on page SEO ranking has been LSI or Lateral Semantic Indexing Keywords (You can use one excellent LSI tool HERE). What LSI keywords do is that they relate search terms with the actual original keywords that the user enters. For example, suppose the user enters the original keyword as “How to make money online,” some of the related LSI keywords would include:
  • Making money online
  • How to get profit online
  • Tips for making money online
  • Steps to make money online
  • Making money online made easy
LSI keywords are directly related to the entered keyword. This factor is one of the main reasons why websites such as Wikipedia are successful because they make use of such keywords throughout their articles. While creating a website, one should definitely keep this factor in mind and make use of LSI keywords in titles, descriptions and throughout the body of the articles to increase on page SEO ranking.
Here is one video from Google Webmasters YouTube Channel about effective on page optimized site:

Off Page SEO Tips and Practices for 2012

Certain factors are responsible for determining off page SEO ranking and these include:
  1. Different link types
  2. Deep Page Links
  3. Variety in TLD’s
  4. Variety in Anchor Text
1. Different Link Types:
Using different link types is advisable for the long-term success of the website. It actually takes time for people to figure this out. They make a start with giving preference to blog commenting and forum posting and see some success, but over a period of time, these start to become less effective. In order to obtain the best results, what one can do is start building backlinks from different types of platforms. Some of the different types of links that can be built include:
  • Article Directories
  • Social Bookmarking
  • Social Media Sites
  • Wiki backlinks
  • Web 2.0
  • Press Releases
  • Niche Relevant blog comments
You should also mix “do follow” and “no follow” links in order to make the link building appear natural. Also stay away from spammy links such as mass blog commenting and mass forum profiles. Avoid going after 1,000’s of links instead focus on the quality of link sources.
2. Deep Page Links:
It should be ensured that all the links that are built are not only to the primary domain. The site’s inner pages need links built for them too. For example, suppose you run a website about making money online, it would be advisable to have links distributed as below:
  • Latest tips about making money online: 10-20 links
  • Most popular techniques for making money online: 10-20 links
  • Most used methods for making money online: 0-10 links
  • Best making money online tutorials: 0-10 links
3. Variety in TLDs:
Search engines will find it unnatural if most of your links are coming from the same TLDs or Top Level Domains. It is therefore important that you mix it up.
4. Variety in Anchor Texts
After the penguin update websites that built links with zero or minimal variation in the anchor texts suffered from a major drop in their ranks. This used to work very effectively, but not anymore.
The following format works effectively at present:
  • 35-45% of the links to be built with LSI keywords (anchor text related keywords)
  • 45-55% of the links to be built on the basis of random text such as “Click Here Now,” “Click Here,” “Get More Info,” “domain.com,” etc.
  • The rest of the 10-15% of the links to be created with the primary keyword being used for the rankings

Advanced SEO Keyword Research Tips and Ideas!

This post is for anyone who is an SEO, Online Marketer, Domain Name Buyer or PPC in general and does keyword research using the Google Keyword Tool. Don't get me wrong -- keyword research is a very important aspect for SEO and if you do not do it correctly you can make a huge mistake by targeting your whole SEO campaign around specific keywords which are not all that correct. Some times the data can leave you a bit angry when you compare it with other real time sources or more accurate PPC data.
I have decided to do a bit of a write up how you can use incorporate some more advanced elements into your keyword research process, rather than just having the standard keyword with search volume. I would like online marketers to start thinking differently about how you gather your keyword research data. Sure enough I am sure many savvy SEOs have already incorporated some of the elements I am going to talk about in the post.
Step 1 - Selecting The Keywords!
Finding out which keywords you want to utilize for your keyword research, can be a long process especially when you are working with e-commerce clients, some ways in which you can speed up the process include:
  • Looking at what keywords competitors are targeting.
  • Gathering a list of products and categories from your client.
  • Talking to internal stake holders in the business and gathering ideas such as copy writers.
  • Looking at the current site structure.
  • Using search engine auto suggest scrapers to find related keywords.
  • Taking ideas from Google Keyword Tool.
  • Using other keyword research tools such as Wordtracker.
Step 2 - Sorting The List In Google Keyword Tool!
OK, so you have worked out the keywords in which you wish to target. Now the next step head over to the Google Keyword Tool.
For my example I will be using the following example:
Market: Australia
Keywords: Fashion Related Page
I will be targeting the following keywords for a new page I am creating:
  1. online fashion
  2. plus size fashion
  3. fashion clothing
  4. fashion clothes
  5. fashion online
  6. ladies fashion
  7. mens fashion
  8. Australian fashion online
  9. fashion accessories
  10. fashion stores online
  11. guys fashion
  12. girls fashion
  13. men's fashion
  14. women's fashion
Now do the following:
  1. Sign into the Google Keyword Tool and make sure you log into your Google account. You would be surprised how data is different from beeing logged in and logged out.
  2. Copy and paste in the keyword you have selected.
  3. Make sure you select [Exact] match type.
  4. Select your region (for me I will be selecting Australia) then select the devices you wish to scan.
wst
click for larger view
Now once you have done the above, do the following:
  1. The key area to look at is the Local Monthly Searches, unless you are targeting a global brand.
  2. Be sure to monitor the keyword ideas section.
  3. Click download as CSV for excel.
 wst arif anjum
click for larger view
Step 3 - Adding In Some Keyword Difficulty Scores From SEOmoz!
Open up the fantastic SEOmoz keyword difficulty tool here: http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/keyword-difficulty/and place the keywords for which you will get the competitive data. If you don't use SEOmoz then try out Market Samurai, though after recently API updates with Yahoo it has run into some trouble.
wst
Now take all the numbers above and place them in a text file which you can copy across to your excel csv file you are building.
An extra keyword research blog post worth looking at is by Jahn an up and coming SEO who I have been managing for 12 months he has more keyword research basics here: http://www.http://olxonline.com/about-us.html
Step 4 - Adding In Some Social Media Data!
Another advanced idea with keyword research is adding in social media data into your keyword list, it can provide extra information for your keyword list.

Buzz metrics data was already tracking Australian related websites which we have used for the fashion niche. Data from Topsy and Social Mention is more focused on US data I have decided to use Buzzmetrics for my social data. If you are in the USA it would be advisable to check out Topsy and Social Mention or Radian 6. Once you have scanned all the websites you will be able to see mentions data per keyword be sure to refine your search data from social monitoring tools as it can easily become skewed out.
arif anjum

Topsy data is another fantastic source of information for social sharing data. It is advisable to use the "Advanced Search" field.
arif anjum

Social Mention is another great free social monitoring tool. It is advisable to use the Advanced Search section.
arif anjum

Step 5 - Adding In Your Paid Search Data!
The great thing about working with paid search teams is that you have paid search data at your fingertips to use, you can have impression data for specific keywords, CTR data and also conversion data if you are selling products. You can easily match up the data with a vlookup in Excel.
Step 6 - Your Excel Template!
Now your excel file should be gathering some extra fields and you should have some extra data, an example of what you will see is as below. Now my next step is to color in the various keyword which match what you want to target, for example I do not want to target any keywords which have higher than 45 keyword difficulty in SEOmoz and also below 350 exact monthly searches. You can set rules in excel to do this step quickly.
Also you can select lower sections for your social mentions, impressions, CTR and conversions it really comes down to personal preference and time allowance.
- Also please note the figures above are only a guide, I have just made this template to show potentially what the data could look like.
Conclusion!
Overall this is just a guide and a few quick keyword examples to show areas you can incorporate into your keyword research, sure all clients and verticals are different so you need to switch up your methods for each new niche. You can also find various other methods in which you can incorporate into your keyword research, finally if you have any additional methods you would like to add please share them in the comments section below!
